ORGANIZERS

WELCOME

It is a pleasure for us to invite you to the 7th Symposium on Phosphorus in Soils and Plants (PSP7) –” “Towards a sustainable phosphorus utilization in agroecosystems”. The symposium will be held from 3 to 6 October 2022 in Montevideo, Uruguay hosted by School of Agronomy- University of the Republic and the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA). After more than 20 years from its departure point in Beijing 2000, the Symposium lands for the second time in South America, where it will tackle the issues of the current P cycle, in the agroecosystems of the region but also of the world. On the one hand, many agroecosystems in the world, such as the South American one, face phosphorus scarcity for sustaining economically viable levels of primary and secondary production. On the other hand, the systematic addition of P for attaining those levels of productivity has put under consideration how to manage high phosphorus levels which gives rise to problems of eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems. That dichotomy of the phosphorus cycle in agroecosystems pushes both the scientific society and the agricultural sector to join so as to look for sustainable solutions. Therefore, it is fundamental to congregate actors from different sectors in the PSP7 such as the academia, education sector, private sector, government and stakeholders, from the region and the world. The scope of the topics will range from fundamental insights of phosphorus biogeochemical cycles to applications such as crop breeding, fertilizer development, soil management and performance of environmental impact assessments. The conference also aims to attract a large number of scientists from developing countries where phosphorus scarcity is a major issue.

We especially invite students and young researchers to attend the PSP7, as well as well-known scientists from the different disciplines. It will be a space where we will learn about the current state of the different research topics related to Phosphorus cycle, new techniques and procedures and last conceptual advances. Moreover, we will take advantage of the friendly and interactive environment by congregating all actors.

The historic city of Montevideo, the entry port of the world to southern South America, opens its hands to receive all of you to the Rio de la Plata grasslands and crop lands. You will be delighted with the cordiality of the citizens, impressed with the professionalism of the PSP7 organizers, and amazed with up-to-date knowledge of the different disciplines.
